Laminate Flooring Scratch Test from Swiss Krono

05.05.2013

Among the many tests performed by the Swiss Krono Quality Control Lab is the "Scratch Test" that tests the wear layer of Swiss Krono laminate flooring. This one minute video shows the process performed on samples taken from the Swiss Krono production line in Barnwell, South Carolina--the largest laminate flooring production facility in North America.

The wear layer is the aluminum oxide layer that protects the decorative layer (the layer that give the laminate plank its design and color) from scratches and abrasions. It also protects the plank from UV rays in sunlight that can fade color over time. Every Swiss Krono plank has this protection.

What the technicians are looking for is "gloss loss" by putting the samples through a rigorous test sequence performed by a Mini-Martindale machine. Procedure A uses a very fine abrasive pad moving in a specific, computer-controlled pattern. After Procedure A is performed, the technician tests the gloss loss and changes the pads and the pattern and cycle count in Procedure B. The pad has a different weight and
coarseness. After the tests, the samples are carefully examined under daylight conditions for scratches and damage.

It's just one more way Swiss Krono ensures the highest quality for you!
